So, What Does a Coach Actually Do?
If you have no idea of what a personal coach is, and wonder what on earth could be the value in taking on a coach, then you’ve come to the right page.
A Potted History
You may not have heard of personal coaching before because it is a relatively recent profession – however, people have been coaching each other informally since time immemorial! At its simplest, coaching is being helped by another person along your journey towards any goal.
Sports people have long known the value of having a coach – someone to help them define their goals, keep them on track, motivate them and sometimes teach them new skills.
Then, in the last couple of decades, businesses began to realise that focused support helped their bottom line tremendously, and so the concept of formalised business coaching came about.
As business coaching grew in popularity, people realised that coaching could help them in their personal lives, too. So, about 15 years ago, the personal coaching industry was born. It continues to grow in leaps and bounds as people experience coaching first-hand, and realise what brilliant results it helps them to achieve.
Did you know that most successful people have some type of coach in their lives?
The Coaching Process
When you become the client of a professional personal coach, you’re taken through a series of targeted questions and processes that help you get clear on what is that you really want in relation to a specific goal. A coach helps you define your goal, acknowledge your current reality and potential obstacles, and create a plan for achieving the goal.
Over subsequent weeks and months, you ‘meet’ regularly with the coach (often by phone) to be held accountable to the actions you set yourself, to discuss obstacles and throw around ideas for ways around those obstacles, and to set new action steps to take you towards your goal. This is all done in a hugely supportive, compassionate way – your coach encourages you to keep pursuing the steps needed to reach your goal, and at the same time they help you push through limits, session by session.
But Why Couldn’t I Do That Myself?
At this stage, you may be asking: why on earth do I need a coach, when I could do all of that for myself? Well, you could do it all yourself, and many very motivated people do!
However, very few of us come from cultural and family backgrounds where high achievement was, or is, actively encouraged, or we may have limiting beliefs we’ve taken on in response to negative events in our lives. Also, we may not have a structured support system, one where someone gives us uninterrupted, focused time to help move us towards our goals. Or, we just find it difficult to get the strength to do it all on our own (especially when we’ve tried, and failed, and tried, and failed…).
That’s where a personal coach comes in – someone who focuses entirely on YOU and your goals in every session. A good coach also comes with a ‘toolkit’ of processes that help you bust through limiting beliefs. These tools, combined with regular support and accountability, help you achieve their goals much faster (and with much less pain) than if you were struggling by on your own.
With a coach, you naturally take more action, and the synergy of having two minds working on solutions is also incredible. The added bonus is that you definitely open yourself up to thinking BIGGER!
The Coach with More
I believe the best type of coach is a mix between a coach and a consultant (or mentor). This type of coach not only guides and supports you to reach your goals, but has either achieved what it is that you want to achieve, or is on the path to doing so (a few steps ahead of you). They can then share with you the benefit of their experience, all while helping you along your own path.
Does That Help?
I hope this information has given you an insight into what a coach actually does, and the tremendous value that coaching provides.
I know how much coaching has helped me to achieve goals more quickly than I could have imagined, and I feel so privileged to be part of a profession that is helping to support and lift people towards their life-enhancing goals!
I also love being a law-of-attraction coach-and-consultant, because I help people use universal laws in a conscious, positive way – which, when combined with focused action, catapults my clients towards amazing results.
